In this course we look at the dynamics of communication between speakers from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. In which ways do speakers adapt to each other, what do they carry into the conversation assuming that it is shared information, and how do they construct differences? We explore the theoretical notions of alignment, common ground, contextualisation, and the role of membership and conceptualisation, and apply them to examples from the participants’ own experience. Consequently, participants will be carrying out their own little research projects in aspects of intercultural communication and relate them to the theoretical issues in pragmatic research discussed in the course.
