Traces In Depsy

Description

There's some gear to generate an extra level, but no provisions to have more structures on non-syntax levels ... Has to be looked up in more detail.

Comments

  1. traces are thrown away (resp. not cared for) in readNegraSentence. Adding them there would be straightforward.
  2. There does not seem to be a one-to-one correspondence between traces in the Penn treebank and the structure we want to generate. For example, we probably do not want the traces in passive constructions (this is a modeling question) and we do not want the traces for the "hidden subject" in infinitive constructions (as guessing them would be rather hard for the grammar).
  3. Traces seem to be helpful in the case of " 'This is great', he said " where the preposed sentence argument ('This is great') is connected to the main verb via a trace. These cases could also be trivially resolved with some kind of graph rewriting.
  4. The traces in relative clauses are definitely helpful since otherwise it would be more difficult to see if "which" pertains to the subject or the object of the relative clause
