- traces are thrown away (resp. not cared for) in readNegraSentence. Adding them there would be straightforward.
- There does not seem to be a one-to-one correspondence between traces in the Penn treebank and the structure we want to generate. For example, we probably do not want the traces in passive constructions (this is a modeling question) and we do not want the traces for the "hidden subject" in infinitive constructions (as guessing them would be rather hard for the grammar).
- Traces seem to be helpful in the case of " 'This is great', he said " where the preposed sentence argument ('This is great') is connected to the main verb via a trace. These cases could also be trivially resolved with some kind of graph rewriting.
- The traces in relative clauses are definitely helpful since otherwise it would be more difficult to see if "which" pertains to the subject or the object of the relative clause
