- Health Insurance for Students
All students in Germany MUST have health insurance (Krankenversicherung). You need certification of such in order to enroll. EU citizens
Generally, a copy of the European Health Insurance Card is sufficient proof of health insurance from the home country. Non-EU citizens
It is generally cheapest to sign up for health insurance with one of the public health insurance schemes. Rates for students who are required to be insured (aged 30 and younger) are regulated by law and are currently 47.53 EUR per month. There is little variation in the services covered by these schemes. If you are privately insured in your home country or in Germany and younger than 30, you will need to obtain a waiver (Befreiungsbescheinigung) from a public health insurance scheme. Some countries have a social security agreement (Sozialversicherungsabkommen) with Germany. This means that you can receive a special claims certificate (Anspruchbescheinigung) from your health insurance agency in your home country which will then be recognized as proof of insurance in Germany. Names of these special certificates: E 128 (Norway), CH 11 (Switzerland), T/A 11 (Turkey), TN/A 11 (Tunisia) The Techniker Krankenkasse is the cooperation partner of the International Students' Office of the University of Hamburg.
