The summer school takes place on the premises of the Department of Informatics of Hamburg University. Directions on how to reach this place can be found here.

When you arrive in the bus/railway station or Airport look after a person holding a paper with "ELSNET 2006"

For the case that the meeting fails:

From Airport following transportation is possible:

  • Taxi: will cost about 15 Euro to the city center, and your accommodation place
  • Airport city Express, 5 Euro one way.It will bring you to the main railway station which is near to your accommodation place.
  • Bus 110, at a regular price of 2,50 Euro, brings you at the Underground station (U-Bahn) "Ohlsdorf"

Accommodation

The nearest underground station is "Berliner Tor". Consider some 45 minutes to reach the Summerschool place. Hamburg is hudge (60 km ! in diameter)

Transportation in Hamburg

  • Transportation in Hamburg is quite expensive. One-way ticket costs 2,50 Euro and is valid for an unlimited time, including change on bus and underground with the condition that you do not return
  • For one day it is cheaper to buy a "day-card" = "tageskarte" = 4,55 Euro (valid after 9:00 a.m)
  • From our calculations the cheapest solution for 2 weeks is a so called "Flexi Card" for 21 Euro /week. ATTENTION: you need a photo for this. For those ones who sent us the photo we will provide this.
  • In week-end and after 21.00 p.m in working days, you are required to show your ticket to the bus-driver

Useful Words and Abreviations:

  • HVV = Hamburger Verkehrsverbund = network of means of transportation in Hamburg
  • DB = Deutsche Bahn = german railway network
  • U-Bahn = underground
  • S-Bahn = identical with U-Bahn but covers broader areas. Tickets for bus and U-Bahn are also valid in U-Bahn
  • Hamburg Grossbereich = is the zone where the 2,50 Euro ticket and most part of the cards mentioned above are valid. On a plan you will identify this through a grey ring. It covers all important places where you will want to visit .
  • Haltestelle = station. Please notify that in buses, the stop stations have to be signalised
  • Einzelkarte= one-way ticket
  • Richtung = Direction
  • Kurzzug = short train (some underground trains are shorter and stop in marked regions. If it is indicated that it is a short train look after the black/white line on the wall near the line.
  • Wechsel = change
  • Umleitung = redirection

Weather

  • Weather can change very fast even in summer. Be prepared for days with temperature over 25 degrees and even 30, but also for 15 degress 8Celsius) and rain.
  • Something against rain is absolutely necessary, but take also the bath suit.
  • There are a lot of parks and sport possibilites so it could be worth to have some light sport equipment with you.

Opening Hours

  • Normaly big shops and supermarkets open Monday-Friday 08.00-20:00 and on Saturday 08.00 - 18.00 and some are opened until 20:00. sunday normally ALL shops are closed, except some shops in the airport and railway station
  • However during the Football Championship, there are some exceptional open hours, i.e there are some supermarkets especially near the main railway station opened until 22:00 or even 24:00, as well as on Sunday (14:00 - 20:00)
  • Cheap supermarkets: ALDI, Penny Markt, LIDL, Spar, MiniMal

Meals

  • Breakfast is available in the Campus from 8.30 in the morning for very reasonable prices
  • Lunches will be served also in the Campus, for all participants in regime of "student"
  • There are alot of small restaurants and imbiss around the main railway station and the place you live. The dinner is in Campus not possible.
